10.31.04 in time for the elections, check out oh-so-obvious dj shadow remix of radiohead's the gloaming (sidebar), which you can't hear elsewhere. it's good, not great, but good. worth a listen. oh yeah, and vote for fuck's sake. link | 0 comments 10.28.04 is this in the news? turns out a reporter embedded with the 101st in iraq got some pictures of those explosives that were "already missing" when the 101st showed up. because they weren't already gone. bush let them go after the fact. which you already knew. link | 0 comments 10.25.04 apparently the esteemed mrs. newsom made a funny (very funny, if you ask me). but i don't understand why everyone's talking about bananas. can't we say "suck dick" yet? what year is this? also: some email sent to georgewbush.org. you'd think folks would be better about those TLD's by now. link | 2 comments in all the rush to get out of town, i didn't get a chance to tell you about the amazing experience of seeing pj harvey perform. blood red dress, baby blue heels, black black hair. this woman is sex as we now know it. when she walks on stage, it's like she owns the place. and for the rest of the show, she pretty much did. highlights include the supremely amped drumming, including meet zee monster with not one but two overwhelming drum kits banging the holy hell out of the sound system at the warfield. equally impressive were the vocal gymnastics on who the fuck? and the stunning sight of polly jean rocking out on her guitar while nailing an incredible array of pedals with the toe of one of those hot blue shoes. there was a second show on friday night that must have kicked major ass. if you like noise, guitars, drums and sex, you should see pj harvey screaming on stage. i'd almost venture to say the experience is worth what some people would pay for it, but since it's my first time seeing her, i'll have to curb that one. link | 1 comments 10.24.04 just got back from a weekend on the russian river with kate and her crew. it's so recharging to change the scenery for a few days. in the moblog, you can see what chris looks like bundled against the morning cold, kayaking on the river. can i tell you that i've never kayaked? i mean, i have, in the sense that i've gone out as part of a group (3 to a boat) in morro bay. but there's something totally amazing about being out on the water alone, totally alone, in what feels like the middle of the universe. it was early, when i went out this morning; i just kind of rolled out of bed and into the boat. the water was glassy still, the river a few feet lower than the day before, fog rolling around the tops of the hills, coming in from the ocean just a few miles down stream. i shutter my mind, closing off to everything but the mechanical sensation commanding muscles to push the boat forward and the utter silence, interrupted only by the sound of the water slicing away. it lends back to the reserve that i draw from throughout the other, less bodily fulfilling adventures that the city offers me. to which, of course, i happily return. link | 2 comments 10.19.04 quick at-work post: errol morris is shopping around a few pro-kerry ads (anti-bush, actually. maybe we should just change the party name?) to 527's that might have media buys in need of media. i'm at work right now, so i haven't watched any of these yet, but they look like they've got that apple "switch" look to them (i guess that's kind of the errol morris look, actually). there's also a great print ad based on these that will or has run in the new york times. swing, voter-voter-voter, swing! link | 3 comments 10.18.04 engadget has a nice interview with the CEO of tivo, who sounds like a genuinely nice guy. maybe that's where my little box get's it. link | 0 comments 10.17.04 whatever richard writes, it's always a little funny, a little sad, and a little true. i could just fall right into his posts. like this one. link | 0 comments another fine feather in fresno's cap: the nations capitol for intravenous drug use! the article's really uplifting too, what the with 20% poverty level and the mexican meth cartels and all that jazz. what a cheery place. update: in other news, the fresno bee, that bastion of journalistic excellence, is reporting that eldon and janis dale are retiring. they run the cinnamon roll stand at the county fair. clearly the bee's got the headline's in order. link | 3 comments 10.16.04 i love my neighborhood. there are now four (4) fire trucks backing up traffic (result: honking, honking, car alarms, honking) just a few doors down at the ansonia, one of the two cheap-o residence hotels on our block, which cater largely to foreign student-types. there's always something going down at one of those hotels (next door to each other) that requires an entire brigade of firefighters to charge down the street, sirens blaring, so they can park crooked and stop up traffic for a few blocks. of course, it's looking now like it was nothing, as usual, and they're all leaving. on the subject of my neighborhood, while waiting for a lovely smoothie (thanks jessie!) and enjoying conversation with the friendly staff at the juice bar, i found a really fun little 'zine called "Broke-Ass Stuart's Guide to Living Cheaply in San Francisco" which is exactly that. it's a great read, actually, and this stuart fellow makes a good case for some of the more enjoyable cheap-eats-and-drinks spots in the city, as well as introducing a quite a few that are new to me. equally nice, it's broken down by neighborhood, so you can use it as a handy reference when you find yourself out in a strange neighborhood. myself, i've been enjoying a bit of a spreading of the wings in the drinking scene, testing out a few dive bars on thursday with david and roger (starting at my favorite, edinburgh castle, we did: ha-ra, gangway and the too-bright high tide) and hitting up the highly-recommended sadies flying elephant last night with evan. a good time, as always, was had by all. link | 2 comments 10.14.04 it's about damn time: google your hard drive. (in some limited, non-mac-compatible fashion, of course.) link | 0 comments get it straight, boys. the new york times (and pretty much every other news outlet, natch) offers a breakdown of the facts that were either in question or blatantly misstated during last night's debate. link | 0 comments 10.13.04 see here, i'm not the only one who think's karen o is singing "my weiner's out of control" in y control. update: and can i say that the faint remix of this song is surprisingly excellent? way more restrained than i thought those blokes could ever be. rock out with that chunky guitar sound! link | 0 comments 10.10.04 teeny-tiny micro-watt radio, courtesy of the walker art museum in minneapolis. a good idea that goes for 200 feet. link | 0 comments 10.09.04 missed the debates? download audio of both for free from audible or itunes. you can run, but you can't hide. you know? link | 1 comments wait, what's this all about? apparently there was some kind of strange, rectangular shape bulging out of the back of bush's suit jacket during the first debate. i hadn't heard about this, but salon is claiming it was part of a radio receiver. weird, but at least now we know how cheney makes the damn thing move around and seem so lifelike. (nyt registration generator) link | 0 comments just saw citizens here and abroad play for the first time. this guy pf has been bugging me to see this band since the first time i met him, so i finally caved tonight. they're really something. i'd put this band into the same catagory with film school and rogue wave as a particular segment of the san francisco indie scene that's destined to make an impact. check out the track on the right. just good, old fashioned, jangly indie pop. link | 0 comments 10.05.04 i just watched spiderman 2 on the plane back to san francisco. it's a really classic story boy becomes obsessed with mary jane, starts loosing track of time, can't seem to get his head out of the clouds, can't keep things straight, can't shoot his wad. you know, and some other stuff too. good comic book movie though. i noticed in the title credits that michael chambon was an executive producer. i can't check imdb at the moment (why is that, united?) to see what level of involvement he'll have, but hopefully some of the more delightful aspects in this film will find their way into chambon's adventures of kavalier and clay when it makes it's way to the screen. i'm anxious. link | 3 comments « September 2004 | archive index | November 2004 » built with movabletype |
