along the lines of the post below, has anyone else heard about this? i throw out so much bulk mail from attw, i very well could have gotten this mailer and tossed it. my current phone is starting to suck, but there's no way i'm going to be forced to downgrade by an already crumby carrier, if this article is true.

update: engadget has more details on this. i got The Card last week from attw and called to complain. they made it clear that i did not have to ditch my current phone, and i made it clear that they suck trucker nuts.

where's the best place to look if one wanted to purchase gadgets that are only available overseas? i really want a new phone.

greatest moment this morning: seeing a manhole cover blown open by a flash water spout. next greatest: wishing my new cubicle had higher walls so i could take my pants off to let them dry. springtime!

today we learned a very important lesson. today we learned that the purpose of human society is to procreate. wowie! god, i'll bet everyone's glad to know that. let's get on with the sex, shall we? just like some kind of virus, breed and spawn, breed and spawn. i'm watching these people on tv debate this most ridiculous idea ever. actually, it's hardly a debate. larry king has this absolutely silly woman (marilyn musgrave, the sock puppet behind the bush amendment) sitting there parroting the same 4 lines over and over, regardless of what question she's asked. for christ's sake, it really makes the debate come across as clearly stupid as it is. but i digress. because the people on tv made it clear to me that the purpose of marriage, and moreover mankind, is to make babies. this is good. let's write this into the document.

new mp3, from the magnetic fields. this is from the stellar album 69 love songs, which i stole from brent w. only the first disc though, which makes me sad. it's a tribute to friday night. only i can't remember why.

the weekend. a chance to get away. a chance to relax. a chance to drink until we can't remember our own first name.

our office is re-arranging, so on friday they asked us to box everything up and leave early. i'm to report to a shiny new cubicle on monday, but apparently my boss's things showed up on the wrong floor, so i'm not exactly optimistic.

the early out gave my coworkers and i a chance to get out and do what we really seem to do best; get sloppy drunk. i paid the price all day saturday with the hangover of a lifetime. i've also got a mesh trucker hat that clearly does not belong to me.

i went on to such great heights as cooking another meal that set off the smoke alarm and inspired jessie to make the claim "our kitchen will never be the same." without getting into the gory details, i'll tell you that i needed rubber gloves to do the cleanup. this is my most dangerous meal yet. watch out.

the last episode of sex and the city, while a little overwrought, struck me the perfect wrap-up solution. clearly, carrie needed to leave the russian, but it would have been a tragic mistake for her to marry Big (john? wtf?) or end up totally alone. gawd.

also, thanks to jeremy and larry (as well as part of that friday night binge, as far as i can remember) i've been introduced to aqua teen hunger force. a brilliant light shining on our lovely tivo. happy weekend.

i'm so angry at howard dean right now. i feel totally betrayed. i've got a kerry-hangover and i wanted, more than anything, to wake up in the morning and know that howard dean, a man who's ideas i could get behind, who's character i could get behind, would have some clout or some pull inside the political machine. dean had an army behind him, he had the money and he had the clout to set the tone and direction of this campaign. and maybe, if he'd played his cards right, to make an impact on our political lives in a larger, lasting way. even without winning the nomination. but he blew it. and that's why i'm mad. because he had a chance to do something really interesting, in spite of his losses in the primaries. instead, because he couldn't let go, because he couldn't see the forest for the trees, dean has lost any chance of doing that. he's ended up looking silly, out of touch, irrelevant. if he had graciously conceded defeat earlier, instead of holding on and getting angry (at everyone..) i really believe that he would still be relevant. now he's just a funny sketch on saturday night live. and we're left without a candidate with any real fire, without someone that can really inspire us (to anything other than beating Bush, that is). and it's just a shame.

writing a short story is hard. it's hard because everything needs to be perfect, because every word has to count for something. the whole thing has to work harder, each sentence, each word pulling more than it's own weight. it's inspiring, and also hard, to read a great piece of writing when you're trying to write something yourself. raymond carver knew where every word belonged, almost as if they were placed there before him, some style of preordained fiction. he wasn't putting them there but rather uncovering them. simple, perfect little words. exactly what was needed, no more and god knows no less. it's inspiring, and it's intimidating.

congratulations to the happy newlyweds, and everyone else who made history today. when i first heard about newsom's plan, i couldn't help but look at it from a political perspective (god knows the last thing the dem's need is for gay marriage to become a major issue in this election; but as reese points out, it already was). but today as this really started to happen, i realized what an emotional, evocative thing it is. i'm practically in a state of shock, realizing how close this feels to finally having equality. it's certainly not the end, but i feel like it may be the beginning of the end.

holy brushed aluminum! the san francisco apple store is about to open! february 28th is the big day, after which time i'll never set foot in the market street compUSA ever again. here are photos on the construction's progress.

looks like a large (but incomplete) chunk of the windwos (2000 and NT) source code has been leaked to the internet. at best, this will be very embarassing. at worst, it will result in massive computer security problems. this has not been a good week to be a PC user.

i'm a talker. you know that. i like to tell people all kinds of things; what movies i just saw, what i think of their new shoes, how much i hate reality tv, what you should and shouldn't know about your personal computer, how great tivo is, and in general whatever people want to hear. but, my friends, the blind rage of illness has stricken yours truly. i've developed what seems to be a case of laryngitis, or some other largely non-symptomatic condition resulting in the almost complete loss of vocal ability. it's not the first time it's happened to me, but it's newly dreadful each and every time. so i'm sitting here at home, ignoring phone calls (except for work, of course) and whispering across the room to jessie, who clearly does not appreciate my efforts at sotto voce. it's painful, having all these things to say and no way to say them. if i close my eyes, the whole experience feels very helen keller.

whoa! comcast tries to buy disney. how bizzare!

"Please understand, our flash games are in no way a virus. We simply combine peer-to-peer, social networking, and instant messaging into one spectacular technology."

yes, indeed, one spectacular ad-virus. i mean, it's a worm. come on, this thing arrives under false pretenses, installs itself on your computer and propogates without your influence. it's a worm. it's really getting out of hand. when will someone figure out that we need an open solution to this virus problem? something that's small, simple, free to download and preinstalled on everything? this is becoming a real pet peeve of mine these days.

great article over at the times magazine about the virus writing community. makes an interesting addition to the stupid users post of last week.

i never managed to get a good picture of my new desk arrangement, but jessie's already done it for me. note the new features, like sunlight and open space. nevertheless, i'm more than a little sad that i can't lean over my chair and hit my boyfriend on the back of the head anymore.

i was MIA for the better part of last week. the strain of everyday life got the better of me, and when i came to, i found myself on a gurney in an unknown mexican hospital. stealing a pancho and hitch-hiking my way to masachusets, i made a sign from a box top that said 'vote dean' but realized i was at the wrong rally. clearly this is where i went wrong. you may not know this, but i have a history of turning up at the right rally with the wrong sign. so, when CNN told me it was all over, i hopped a train headed west and found myself back home again. somehow along the way, i got sick, perhaps from the unwashed boxcar floors, or perhaps it was the dirty needles i was keeping in that rusty tin can.

The tension...underscores a growing friction between technophiles and what they see as a breed of technophobes who want to enjoy the benefits of digital technology without making the effort to use it responsibly.

geek's lash out. this is the most perfect article ever. i can't begin to cite enough quotes from this one. go read it. this has got to be one of my top 5 pet-peeves. why do perfectly smart, capable people play stupid to their computers?
