11.30.01 "Revealing grades in open class is needlessly embarrassing, and violates federal law, a the lawyer for an Oklahoma mother of three argued." the supreme court is considering this right now. i find it interesting, but i'm surprised it made it as far as the supreme court. in other news, George Harrison died. very sad. # 11.29.01 my goodness, jonno's got web-celeb effect in full force now - he got a super-star treating from rupaul, who is suddenly my favorite celebrity weblog. (sorry wil wheaton) # this month's photos from jessie are my favorite. go spend some time with them. they're my favorite ever, hands down. (does this make anyone else think of miami vice, sans the bmw?) # the gist of the last post is that tomorrow (today) is the big exam, and my friends and i have been studying hard. this one is it, folks. the most difficult class in the program, and the entire grade is based on two exams. and these are tests, let me tell you. the whole thing tomorrow rests on one huge, complex-system problem. a series of inter-related problems interlock together to form a giant, throbbing mass of numbers and math that would, to the untrained eye, appear to be some new flavor of chaos. and i'm ready for it. # can i tell you how much i love my major? alright, the topic isn't what i love. i like it, but don't love it. but the people - my school friends are amazing. they're the bright shiny part of my school experience. see, i am in a small department. about 300 students total. all our classes, labs, club meetings and faculty offices are all along the same corridor of the same building. going to class means running into at least four or five people you know really well along the way. in class, you know everyone. you know the professors, and they know you. students and faculty joke around and talk with one-another. at the end of each quarter there's a banquet dinner, where everyone goes and has a nice meal, sits around and drinks together and has a all-together fun time. we go to the bars together, we ditch class and go to the beach or a movie. we're really all like a family. in a strange, facts of life kind of way. and i love it. i'll miss it. # 11.28.01 olga? do we really have a hurricane named olga? someone get the hurricane naming people on the phone. # 11.26.01 i'm gonna write a travel book and call it, Spain: for a quick fuck. # i was starting to feel bad for ernie about his chunky mention at shift magazine's 100 fav sites; then i realized that he is on their 100 fav sites list. so like, um, shut up? shift can call me an ugly mother-humping dog fucker if they want. it's all about the link. # from those crazy kids at ideabox: the guide to asking a girl on a date. now, this isn't your usual prosaic* fair, being mainly that it's about, you know, girls. but i've seen a recent trend in the straight-male-friend population which suggests that perhaps this is a good link at a good time. i'm mixed about posting this though. it reads a little like a joke (although it's very true, fellas) but it lives at autistics.org, a genuine resource site for autistic folks. so, um, yeah. # discreet may port 3D Studio Max onto macos x. alongside maya, could this signal a serious high-end platform shift? # can i tell you how much i love getting packages? and these last few days have been especially great, with thanks to mark for a wonderful gift and aaron for his brilliant timing and adorable youthful self. in other news, it appears that there is a "cruisy bathrooom" at my school! hmm, perhaps it's mine... # scary, scary, scary. the 2003 Snoop DeVille, from Cadillac. hydraulics included. is this for real? (credit to dan for spotting this on) # 11.25.01 my little sister told me this weekend that Britney Spears actually lipsync'ed her HBO special last week. can anyone verify this? # PLANES, TRAINS... since jessie really covered holiday events pretty well, i'll fill you in with a travel rant. i've spent more time on the road in the past four days than a human should be allowed to. for no rational reason, the road-demons decided to do some construction along a one-lane strech of highway on the busiest travel holiday of the year. little over two hours were spent inching along a baren strech of highway that usually takes about 30 minutes to breeze through (the 152 from Pacheo into Gilroy, for those who know). that, of course was followed the next day with the ever-so-lovely drive from san francisco to san luis obispo, a sporty 4 hour ordeal, which routinely includes a "layover" of undetermined length as all traffic grinds to a halt outside of san jose. ugh! in other news, i love to fly. i don't do it nearly enough. i came to this realization as i sat in my car, idling next to the airport as i waited for traffic to inch along. most people i've met tend to hate, or at least dislike flying. i however, love everything about it - the airport, the plane, the turbulence, the take-offs and landings. there's a thrill that i get, which is part tactile, part experiencial, part emotional. i love being up so high in the air and suddenly realizing that i'm sitting in a giant steel tube hurtling through the atmosphere. it's a total defiance of everything that makes good rational sense and i love the entire thing. it makes me sad to think that recent events, fear-of-flying and other things are hurting the airlines. i'd like to volunteer myself to save them - the government can pay to fly me from city to city, airline to airline, circling the globe in an effort to single-handedly boost air-travel. i'm telling you, this is gonna work! # rad! first was wil wheaton, now rupaul - it's celeb-weblog time, everyone! (thanks go to jonno) # 11.21.01 ah, the holiday is upon us. expect no updates around here throughout the weekend, but be sure to come back next week. i'm heading out to see the family and enjoy a few days away. have a happy thanksgiving, everyone. # gas for only 88 cents?! now i've seen everything! san luis is down to $1.19 or so, and i thought that was low! did somebody start drilling in alaska and forget to tell us? what's going on here? # during a rather lucid moment of dreaming, i felt certain that i was wearing many bandages, and that each should be removed, though i was afraid of the pain of removing them. # 11.20.01 "perhaps home is not a place, but simply an irrevocable condition." # 11.19.01 ok, so after watching the trailer i'm hooked - i want to see tape, the new ethan-uma movie from richard linklater, who also recently did waking life. # Carrie Donovan, the fun and hip fashion editor turned old navy spokeswoman dies at 73. i'll miss seeing her quirky commercials, and her fun glasses. [update: after a quick peek around the web, it appears i'm the only person who thought she was kinda fun. oh well.] # wired says it's cool and trendy to 'photoshop' stuff. (i.e. this stuff) # the late douglas adams, author of the hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy apparently had written a final, sixth novel in the series ('the increasingly inaccurately named hitchhiker's trilogy'). it was discovered and will be published next year. # the greatest american propaganda tool ever: mtv. # in honor of the upcoming travel holiday, i've posted what is my current favorite driving-screaming song, impossibility. i think i've kept remy zero's new album (TheGoldenHum) in my car at least two weeks past expiration date, if for no other reason than that i can yell very loudly as this track hammers it way from start to finish. great driving music. # 11.18.01 This goes against everything that film critics, myself included, are accustomed to saying. We have a certain Chicken Little tendency: The sky is always falling, the movies get crappier and crappier every year, and the golden age that never existed in the first place is fading ever more into memory. yes, virginia, there is a happy movie critic. salon's Andrew O'Hehir actually thinks 2001 might have been one of the best years so far for the art-flick. with some exceptions, i agree with his line-up. in true salon fashion, this article is hellasciously long. pages 3 and 4 list the films. # OVERHEARD: "i just can't seem to hit on him - it's like sticking to teflon." # the hottest new toy this holiday season: leather-dragon barbie. # what a weekend! met quite a few nice/cool/cute/fun boys and girls, hung out with some really cool people, saw waking life (which was startlingly great) and finished off the night with a very sweet and relaxing time spent with friends watching the amazing display from the Leonid meteor shower. i feel like i should give you all something more than highlights, but it's late, so those will have to wait. # 11.17.01 jerry springer, sally jessy raphael, teller (of penn and) gilbert gottfried and robin leach are gonna do rocky? wow. # 11.16.01 today my school had a print-industry career day. (as per last night's post) so last night i stayed up late trying to redesign and update my resume. arriving at school this morning, i downloaded the new pdf file and printed it out on a school computer, only to find that the pdf had become corrupt somewhere in transit. the result was that throughout the document, every occurance of the letters A and H appeared in bold. so when you look at my resume, it says "HAHAHAHAHAHAHA" throughout. fuckers. # i'm sure this is old news by now, but apparently wil wheaton is gonna be in the next star trek movie. (hehe. i can't believe i'm actually posting this) # hmmmm. a re-examination of the modern bathhouse. anyone wanna share fun personal stories? ;) # 11.15.01 ugh, tomorrow is a "career day" at my school. unfortunatly for me, it's time to buckle down and start looking for a job for this june. what sort of job, you ask? i dunno. what kind of location, you ask? i dunno. what are you gonna wear, you ask? i dunno. # fresh new photos are available now. most of these are from last month's camping trip. feedback (including nice constructive criticism) is welcome. # You cannot "run out" of sperm, so you can masturbate as often as you like. The worst thing that can happen is your penis might get a little sore. how could i have remained oblivious all these years to jackin' world ("the ultimate male masturbation resource") ? they even have a FAQ/How-to. unbelieveable! (via ameer) # 11.14.01 apple releases airport 2.0 and os x 10.1.1, following adobe's illustrator for x and the recent, fabulous, ipod & itunes 2.0. now there's rumors that final cut pro for os x is so fast that hardware based "real-time" rendering cards will become obsolete. amazing. # 11.13.01 i'm trying to find out more about hybrid cars. i know that honda sells the rather hideous insight, and that toyota makes the silly looking prius. do any other car companies have hybrid vehicles out yet? any of the european manufacturers? (VW, anytime soon?) if anyone has more info about this i'd love to hear it... # You could wear a T-shirt around town that says, "Hey, I'm gay. Wanna fuck?" a hilarious advice column from instinct magazine. what's the deal with this rag? i don't think i've had the pleasure of running into it before. good, bad or indifferent? either way, advice for gay men from a straight girl is pretty fun stuff (i.e. "the sausage-links game"). # if the boys over at east/west can go trailer trash, so can i. at my friend tyler's insistence, i present you with the hair of the future:
# from dan, a little "gift" to readers who are planet out memebers. the only question that bears asking: why didn't you find this in illinois, jessie? # 11.12.01 am i getting old? i find myself listening to npr in the car these days. what's going on? # on my way home from san francisco, i went there and saw it. impressive, very impressive... # i've never posted my amazon wish list before, but considering my current financial state, someone's welcome to surprise me with the new radiohead i might be wrong: live recordings ep that comes out tomorrow... # 11.11.01 file under missed opportunities: the chance to fight my way through the masses of gay men to see, meet and get the autograph of the sooooooo hot ck model travis, who's hottness (via a larger-than-life photo of his crotch) has been plastered around san francisco for weeks now. [updated photo courtesy of jessie] # "let's throw this out; nothing ruins a mood like trying to squeeze out the last drib of joy jelly." - jessie # with november rushing upon us, it's time once again for my favorite of those family films, Holly Hunter's Home for the Holidays. does anyone know a good way to come out to their grandparents? (bonus question: how do you know if your spinster aunt is a lesbian?) # 11.10.01 without establishing the pretense that i might actually get some motivation and update, i thought i'd share this with you, dear reader. it's slightly wacky. # 11.08.01 i'm headed up to san francisco this weekend to witness this. 'nuf said. have a good weekend everyone! # only in college moment #103: getting a ride home from school from a strange girl in a hot sports car. go figure. # wife murders husband! wife cooks husband! wasn't this the plot of some USA movie of the week or something? (btw, is anyone else surprised to learn that USA Networks owns ticketmaster?) # 11.07.01 my father got laid off today. go economy. # WHY'S CHOKING ON WHY'S since i can't seem to find any worthwhile content to post this week, i thought i'd at least do everyone the courtesy of updating the mp3 of the moment. i've posted paper bag from fiona apple's second (better?) album, when the pawn...(something, something), which is one of my favorite tracks on the album. it was also the victim of a surprising study-session-turned-acappella-massacre. that was fun! # 11.06.01 this is malicious and just plain creepy. and it's from our government. # although he wasn't as pretty as chris #2's celeb run-in, i swear that Armistead Maupin was seated directly in front of jessie and i this weekend at the new Coen brother's film. # 11.05.01 i had such high hopes this quarter for my literature class. instead of exploring the classics however, i get to listen to the overly simplistic and highly opinionated statements of a classroom full of jocks and sorority girls. our mid-twenties just-outta-grad-school professor (dressed in all black - how apropos) has effectively split all great works of literature into three catagories:
i don't know how much more i can take. plots, metaphors, character motivations are all boiled down into one bite-sized take-home snack-cake of meaning. it's sick. in my humble (sounds real humble, don't it?) opinion, truly great art is a delicate, complex string of subtlety, interwoven into a larger tapestry of context. what's the course number for that class? # i was gonna post about this weekend, but jessie really said it best. (minus Lilly Tomlin, which i didn't see) # 11.04.01 patsy cline kicks so much ass. at least that's the consensus here. # « October 2001 | archive index | December 2001 » built with movabletype |
