wow, so i had a really great weekend, getting to meet/hang out with sparky and jessie. and now, thanks to mark i am fighting with what has turned out to be a rather unruly update to os x. why does it work so well for everyone else?!

 09.27.01

today officially marks the end of the first week of classes. i've now had to attend each of my classes at least twice. everyone who will drop, has dropped. everyone who will add, has added. and i've gotten a good look at all of them.

some of these people will, throughout the course of the next four months, need to be blogged about. and so, i present you with the fall '01 cast of characters:
philosophy boy: take three parts riothero, one part skater and one part josh hartnett. this one is my favorite.

lit boy: what's the best way to start a class? getting cruised by this one. he's obviously playing for the right team (evidence: his bookbag, his structure/gap-inspired look, his walk, his direct eye contact) and he's pretty intelligent. pretty cute, but not winning any awards, this one is the most approachable of this term's meat. there's a good chance i'll ask him to study together.

stats boy: sheer beauty here. stats boy is very appealing to the eye. a very boyish, fresh face, stylish dress, cute hair, smooth tan skin and an affinity for tank tops. plus some cute "i'm studious" glasses for use in the classroom.

gay midget: also in the stats class is this fantastic member of the san luis obispo gay community. he works downtown and everyone's seen him. whether it's on campus, at work or at one of the (few?) local gay parties, gay midget gets noticed. he's little, he's cute, he's dressed for the next circuit party.

stats mother w/child: if you're like me, you thought she would drop after day one. but she's back, and the kid's still crying! why waste your child's infancy on cartoons and stuffed animals, when you can provide him or her with a quality, second-hand college education. today the kid had a blanket laid out, scattered with toys. you'll hear about this one for sure.

the boyfriend: never to be forgotten, it's the boyfriend-whom-i-love-a-lot. you'll hear about this one more than any of the others.

p.s.
it's list day, can't you tell?

#

signs of the coming appocolypse:
  • 9 hour train rides
  • rotten food
  • 6 am
  • locust in the kitchen

#

san luis obispo is a hard place to be a gay boy. sighted, walking home from school:
  • shirtless boy tanning on the grass
  • men's water polo team
  • men's soccer team, playing "shirts & skins"
  • shirtless boy watering his lawn

#

camper's latest post about post-WTC friendly club vocabulary is just too good to sit in idle over in the land of tiny tiny type. go there.

#

finally, a new mp3 is available. it's a fun favorite of mine; blur's girls and boys.

#

in another class, my prof tells us we need to "make love to the customer" and i'm like: um, ok.

#

overheard, from a discussion of wordsworth, in my literature class:
"and it's like, 'this is the most important thing that's happened to me ever' but when you go outside, you're like, in nature, and it's like, so big, and your problem's are like, not important."

 09.26.01

i'm quite happy to see that the 3-day flood in our bathroom seems to have finished. i don't know how we fixed it, because all my roommates and i did was bang on some pipes. thus ends chapter one of the scary pumbling story.

#

i'm trying to keep myself from posting too much about school right now (note the lack of posts) but some stories are simply too good not to share.

there's a larger, middle aged woman in my statistics class (yeah, i have to take a lame stats class). this is not uncommon, and not interesting, unto itself. this older woman, however, has a child. a small child. let's call it a "baby." first of all, who brings a baby to a college class? esp. when there's a day-care right on campus? secondly, who brings a baby to a college lab class?! so it can cry and scream and girgle and hit the computers for two hours. two hours. i'm hoping next time the prof. will ask her to leave the baby at the door with the sodas.

#

ok, this is a pretty general link, but the current issue of The Onion is pretty darn good. it's quite a hilarious, though in spots (the tiny little ones on the bottom left and right, easily missed) still respectful of the nature of the events.

i mean, what we really need now is stuff like "special report:" holy fucking shit," "hugging up 76,000 percent" and "dinty moore breaks long silence on terrorism." my personal favorite? the infographic on making america safer, including "u.s. maps re-drawn with thicker, bolder border."

#

could someone explain to me why bigidea.com is the home of the christian-children's cartoon vegitales? and does it strike anyone else as ironic that this site was almost called bigideaswontgetyouanywhere.com?

#

 09.25.01

i swear i have riothero in my philosophy class.

#

damnit. i was just writing a long post and it was making me feel better. ie crashed and it's gone. now i'm just tired. more to come.

#

While here I stand...with pleasing thoughts / That in this moment there is life and food / For future years.

alright, there are many good things for any west wing junkie right now, especially the fact that the only channel to come in clear on my tv is nbc. a special episode relating the the new york tragedy planned for next week is another. the downfall, of course, is that the season premier is being pushed back by two weeks now. damnit.

#

my statistic's professor is named chance. go figure.

#

psssst!
if you click on the "prosaic" logo, you'll get the cute webcam popup. don't tell me the image is sideways. i know.

#

what's the cruisiest spot in san luis obispo, you ask? why, the hardware store, of course! that place is hot! of course i probably blew my cover when i pulled into the parking lot, windows rolled down, stereo blaring, yours truly screaming along to "paperback writer."

in other butch news, i'm hooking up a washer right now, and spent yesterday re-planting/landscaping the yard & bathroom. not that plants are the most butch thing...

 09.22.01

warner brothers will be releasing a digitally enhanced version Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey in october. the article says it will show at the castro theatre. count me in!

#

the only thing more fun than fucked company's listing of songs that are banned from clear channel's radio stations (after the WTC) is the comments it's gotten (829 at this posting).

#

 09.21.01

new mp3 in sound - modest mouse's teeth like god's shoeshine. call it intelligent rage with a dash of sad, please.

#

the keen observer would note that things are a little slow here right now. that's pretty correct. i'm in the middle of moving back to school from san francisco, and classes are about to start up. so have a little patience with me while i unpack, move in, buy towels, replace lightbulbs, get books, add classes, etc etc etc. i'll be posting with more regularity in the near future.

#

i think the word for this is "wuss" - i'm not sure though, what do you think?

#

 09.19.01

i've posted some new photos over in the images section. they were taken on a recent trip jessie and i took north of san francisco.

#

 09.18.01

nbc has postponed the new season's start by one week, in light of recent events. that includes this week's west wing.

#

new york govenor Pataki offers free college to victims' families; apple gives free ibooks.

#

maybe you've seen a good commercial before. maybe it was funny, maybe it was cute. dancing iMacs perhaps? singing gap kids, maybe? but something really neat, touching, exciting, moving? i dunno. maybe it's the wedding day commercial from volkswagen. of course, maybe its just the really cool song from j.ralph? (note: apparentley j.ralph doesn't have any other good songs. go figure.)

 09.17.01

i was on the bus today and this homeless lady gave me a tiny plastic ring. she held out her hand, put it in mine, looked at me and said "peace." then she got off and walk away down the street. why me?

#

i was up late last night and there was one of those infomercials for dianetics. the way that loud old man decribes it, i can't decided if it's a religion or a new diet. "with dianetics, you'll look great and feel great too!"

#

after a weekend away from sf, i'd like to remind everyone that there's a difference between patriotism and nationalism. and with that, i'm going to stop commenting on this event altogether. i'm no good at it and everyone else is doing it anyway.

#

 09.16.01

so the new mp3 for right now is up in sound. it's radiohead's national anthem and its as appropriate as much anything gets right now. enjoy!

CORRECTION
We would like to correct a report that appeared on CNN. Based on information from multiple law enforcement sources, CNN reported that Adnan Bukhari and Ameer Bukhari of Vero Beach Florida, were suspected to be two of the pilots who crashed planes into the World Trade Center. CNN later learned that Adnan Bukhari is still in Florida, where he was questioned by the FBI. We are sorry for the misinformation. A federal law enforcement source now tells CNN that Bukhari passed an FBI polygraph and is not considered a suspect. Through his attorney, Bukhari says that he is helping authorities. Ameer Bukhari died in a small plane crash last year.
(from cnn)

this is the sort of overzelousness that is going to hurt more people. to make matters worse, there is no headline declaring this mistake, despite the fact that this man's life may now be unforgivably altered. in addition, there is no hard link to this correction. i found it here about halfway down, but who knows if it will still be available later.

please repost this correction, or link it. encourage others to do the same. this man is not a suspect and does not deserve to have this error over his head.

WEDNESDAY
i went to a service tonight at grace cathedral. i haven't been inside a church since my father was in the hospital almost 8 years ago.

afterwards i walked down the hill for a candlelight vigil at california and market. there were maybe 25 people. san francisco could do better. san francisco did do better.

below are images from that vigil. most of the folks there were muslim or arab-american. they lost friends and loved ones too. please remember that.

i am most like meg of not so soft. hey, we both like ani - it's a start.

today was the first ever "bay area blogmeet" and i was kindly invited to attend, despite my import status in the bay area. it was really fun to meet up with some rather interesting people (most of whom i was familiar with). um..."rather interesting" seems to imply that they were somewhat less than fun, which i assure you is not true. i had a really great time meeting everyone, especially 8 legged dj (very cute, and by-the-by, he tells a great story, and is kind enough to make sure that everyone in the room gets to hear it :)

for the brave of heart, there are even more photos over at the surprisingly straight (too bad for us) all about george. i can only hope that i'm still on the guest list the next time this sort of get together happens, even if i'm not "bay area" anymore.

UPDATE:
more photos, some more humiliating than others, are up at stumble now.

a scholarship for gay students who are disowned by their parents? what a good idea. the groups who oppose it claim the scholarship "undermine's parental authority." authority to screw up their child's life, based on their own small-mindedness? hmm. sounds like good parenting to me!

#

it's a bit much for a saturday night, but luckily it's perfect for a sunday morning. many years ago, i heard a great story. i've long since retyped the letter, and posted it here. if you have a few minutes, give it a read. it slightly more relevant (tho not much more so) because of the 50th anniversary.

#

finally something new from steven johnson, editor of the in-stasis feed. johnson's last book, interface culture was really fantastic, exploring the ideas of interface, casting it in a new light, as something approaching an art form.

NOSTALGIA
i was searching around at work this afternoon and came across a collection of newsletters from my former employeer. strange to read old voices. the timespan (aug. '95 to june '97) takes one back to the beginings of all this "internet-economy" craziness. for the mac fan, there's news of the Apple/NeXT merger, Apple's 1997 WWDC (remember when Rhapsody was gonna change everything?) and of course an article on how the Newton was going to change the way you work. for everyone else, tips to reduce line noise.

#

oh yeah. there's some new photos up in the media section.

#

 09.06.01

alright kids, there it is. prosaic* [v.2] is here. your feedback is appreciated, but if it's gonna be critical or negative, lets keep it out of the comments and make it direct. thanks everyone. i'm going to bed.

#

wow. my first real, live, earthquake. it was really tiny though. i thought someone had dropped a pallet on the production floor at work. half the people i work with felt it; the rest of them thought we were crazy.

#

 09.05.01

it's time to start counting down, boys and girls. prosaic* v.2 is less than 48 hours from its debut. needless to say, i'll be spending some time getting cozy with my laptop.

the other milestone we're counting down is visitor number 5,000. at press time, prosaic* was standing at 4,927 visitors. our pollsters are projecting the lucky visitor number 5,000 should be arriving sometime tomorrow evening. there should be some way to commemorate this memorable occasion. if you have any ideas, let's hear 'em!

"i see dead interns," says Georgia legislator.
media-obsessed crazy woman, more Chandra-vision from the news media, or simply a legislator who's truely 'representative' of her constituents? (she's from Savannah - anyone see midnight in the garden of good and evil?)

#

this really makes me cringe. lots of media outlets have, in the past, held liberal bias, but most at least presented both sides of an issue. where will we go for some real news, please? (and damn salon for their "premium" content crap)

#

don't you love Durran Durran's view to a kill? isn't it like, the greatest song ever? not to mention the theme song to the best (camp) James Bond movie of all time? i mean, what movie with christopher walken as the villian isn't great? (don't answer that)

#

Wouldn't that be great to have Courtney Love at your baby shower? Everyone could shoot up, curse, kick some holes in shit, flip everyone off, preach abstinence of everything, and then think up baby names. Now, that's a party.

yes, that is a party.

#

saw ghost world again tonight. i'm more impressed the third time than i have been yet. if you haven't seen this movie, please go see it. really, really amazing film.

"Don't want to hit you, Mr. Saab," he said, addressing the vehicle in front of us. He eased back until his own car tapped the bumper of the car behind us. "I'll just hit you, Mr. Honda."

why i like keeping my beater car safely in a garage.

whoo hoo! the BART strike is off! we'll all be able to get to work tomorrow morning...

wrongwaygoback's worldblog seems like a great idea. what's the premise? gorrilla weblogging, via a right-click link installed on computers in internet cafe's, universities, etc. (so far it's...um...interesting) you can help by spreading the word.

#

it's called the Central Artery/Tunnel Project, but the people of Boston (and anyone who's heard anything about it) refer to it as the big dig. what it is, is perhaps the largest marvel of transportation engineering of our time. in the style of the great WPA projects, the CA/T (big dig sounds dumb if you ask me) is inspiring not only new marvels of engineering but community focused park lands and even artists. although the website is pretty poorly designed and difficult to navigate, there is lots of information for those interested in finding it.
