04.30.01 I just found out the disturbuing news this afternoon and thought I would share it with all you kids out there. Was anyone else unaware that the great Telly Savalas had shed this mortal coil? If you don't believe me, see for yourself. I'm not completely sure how I missed news of this Earth-shattering event. I am, as I am sure you all were (when you found out a mere 7 years ago), deeply saddened. He leaves us with many fond memories. And so, in honor of this great man, I dedicate this site to the actor, the man, the legend that is, Telly Savalas.
# 04.27.01 it's been a very very long two weeks for me (note the significant lack of posts) recently. but tonight i'm relaxed, for the first time in a long while. i'm drinking champagne with my good friends, discussing/debating important ideas, smoking sheesha from a wonderful hooka and thinking of someone who i really care about. for the first time in a while, things are looking up. :) expect more regular posts starting next week. # 04.23.01 its new software play time! for the past few days i have been trying to live with the new OS (more on that later) and now i am downloading ProTools Free to play with some sound apps. my poor laptop is gonna run outta space any day now! # I was wondering how long it would be until I read something about this. [via wired] # 04.13.01 I think I might be in love with creativepro.com. Not only do they carry news specific to the print industry, but they also offer the writing/reporting and musing of color management guru and all-time favorite professor of your's truely, Brian Lawler. # 04.12.01 It really makes me sort of sad to see something like this end. I know Jessie will be back to treat us all to a new site with all new ways of amusing the masses, but for me, there's something very landmark about contrasts.net shutting down. I found contrasts about a year ago, when I first started reading weblogs. For me there was a thrill to the discovery. I had just recently come out to myself. Living in a small town like I do, it was very hard to deal with the personal ramifications of being gay. Even more difficult was the idea of sharing that with the people around me. I didn't feel that anyone I knew would understand what I was feeling. It was a very difficult and lonely time. It's something every gay man and woman feels at one point in their life. When I found sites like contrasts and boylog I felt a little less alone. I read their sites and I saw in them someone else like me. It was amazing to me, to think that I might not be completely alone in what I was thinking and feeling. Even more amazing was the idea that these people were real. That they were flesh and blood and that some day I might actually be able to meet them, or people like them, and not feel so alone. It seems silly to say, but one day, almost a year ago, a weblog saved my life. So I present a few small memories from the old Contrasts.net - a tribute. # 04.11.01 ![]() A page including pdf versions of the old brochures for the greatest computer ever made. # 04.10.01 I've been listening to Amnesiac all evening. The most standout track, IMHO, is Life In A Glass House. I think Pyramid Song might actually be the best track on the album, but I've heard it so much for so long through it's whole various incarnations that I think some of the first-time luster has worn off. I like P.S. a lot - perhaps its Radiohead's best song yet - although its been around a while, and the general sound of the song hasn't changed that much. First it was "Nothing to Fear" then it was "Egyptian Song" and now, finally it's released as "Pyramid Song." And it's fantastic. Life In A Glass House is truely fantastic though. It has these horns that kill me. They're all over it, but not in that crazy buzzy swarming way that the horns come in on Kid A's National Anthem. They're much more relaxed and jazzy. They sound really smooth and comfortable. It just makes the song. Plus the piano and bass. God its just so sweet. There's this tiny little shift in the piano at about 2:50 (-1:45) and its so delicate and tiny...the whole song is like that! Its like all these big elephants walking around, not stomping but just walking, all nice like, with these little flys and birds and tiny little sounds swimming around them. How crazy is that? # Looking at a digital camera tonight - not a good thing to be doing when one has not recently come into money. If anyone has any opinions... # 04.09.01 Studio versions of all 11 tracks from Radiohead's latest, Amnesiac, are now available for download. In full, this album does not appear to be for the faint of heart, although many will enjoy Pyramid Song, I Might Be Wrong, Knives Out and Dollars and Cents. Tracks deserving special attention would be Life In A Glass House, Packt Like Sardines In A Crushd Tin Box and Like Spinning Plates (of the two heavy electronic tracks, this is the more addictive and intriguing). Of course, I implore you to try all of these tracks on for a while before passing judgement. Much like Kid A, the work as a whole deserves some concentrated attention. It feels a lot like Kid A, but much more disjointed and sparce. Less of an "experience" and more of a collection of songs. Be sure to share your thoughts. # Is the US in trouble? Some interesting things seem to be happening on the International front. Everyone seems confident in our supremacy in dealings with angry Chinese regarding the recent incident. However there are a series of smaller incidents which point towards a worldwide backlash against America. Mix this with one part Euro Trouble, one part Olympic fever and a CNN report of increased Chinese beef exports (they use mad-cow safe grains only, the report claimed) and perhaps we have a recipe for a US fallout. In short, we're not the world's economic golden boy these days, we've long since ceased to be everyone's favorite cousin, China could be coming to the rescue of our European beefeaters, organizations which we control and China wants into (WTO, World Bank) are suffering public releations catastrophes and we're about to piss off a few million members of the last Red Army. Ah, but he is only here for four years, right? # 04.06.01 I hate how my favorite sites always shut down for the weekend... # 04.04.01 Web based image correction? Free online flightchecking? If you're a printer, print student, or otherwise associated with the graphic arts industry, E-Services from CreativePro.com might just be the coolest website EVER! # Finally, to end my fit of blogging maddness this afternoon, I have a request; tell me, who are you? # Willy Wonka sound clips and a simulated shower-cam: might this be the pinacle of Flash achievement? # But wait, there's more. Information obtained by the Radiohead Underground (or one page therein) tells us new things about upcoming singles from Amnesiac. Those lucky Brits get three new tracks. Anybody know if I can buy from amazon.co.uk? # Their links don't link, their jumps don't jump, and half of their content is missing. After a mysterious 6 month absence however, I'm glad to see someone is back online. The Mustang Daily Online is perhaps the best way to keep up on recent events of importance here at my lovely university. And for me, it is a labor of love. ;-) # It appears today that yesterday's website containing the Amnesiac promo release is down. The tracks have been spread out to Napster however, and can be found with some careful searching. They're worth the effort. I, of course, have been listening to all four tracks since I downloaded them last night, and they're quite fantastic. Someone (who's opinion I respect greatly) also heard them, calling it 'structured mess' (to paraphrase). Most appropriate. # 04.03.01 mmm, yummy pre-release mp3s. A four track promo for Radiohead's next album, Amnesiac, has been posted. As always, they're fantastic. Kudo's go to followmearound.com for being the most kickass website ever. # It looks like the rest of the recording industry is jumping on the bandwagon behind Bertelsmann. The new service, however, is not a revamped Napster, but instead uses technology from RealNetworks. subscription based, on-demand streaming, endorsed by the big bad record companies? Is this the death of peer-to-peer? # What's this supposed to be, anyway? Have those little weather-pics gotten more obscure these days or is it just me? Either way, the forcast for the next few days seems a little obscure. Guess I should layer, eh? ;)
# 04.02.01 If you haven't heard, 12 new studio tracks from Dave Matthews Band have been leaked. They're hold-overs from the band's sessions with former producer Steve Lillywhite (under the table and dreaming, crash, before these crowded streets). These tracks were scrapped in favor of Everyday, the album just released by the band with producer Glen Ballard. These tracks are the more traditional Dave Matthews sound. You can find them here. If you download them, please consider making a donation to Bama Works Charity. It seems like a nice thing to do. More about that at the bottom of the page linked above. # Goodmorning! After a nasty fiasco with my DSL service last night, we can now resume trial and error efforts to make this work. Not that I have anything to do today or anything.... # I seem to be having some trouble with Outlook for Mac and my school's IMAP server. It can't seem to connect or to find the server at all. Anybody know anything about this? (posted as if anybody is watching this already ;) # Drat, any idea why blogger just chewed up that post? Does it do that often? # this is another test. of links also. # Many thanks to somebody for their help getting this page working. # 04.01.01 Hello people. This is a test. # archive index | May 2001 » built with movabletype |
